POLITICS IN MEXICO



Mexico is a federal presidential representative democracy. The president of Mexico is both head of State and head of government and the constituent States of the federation must also have a republican form of government based on a congressional system as their respective constitutions establish.


The federal government is divided into three powers: executive, legilsative and judicial.

  • The Executive power is directed by the president, who counts with the advice of a cabinet of secretaries independent of the legislature. 
  • The next power is the Legislative, which consists on a two-chamber legilative ( Senate and Chamber of Deputies) and the Congress of the Union.
  • Finally, the Judicial power is made up of the Council of the Federal Judiciary, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and other tribuals.

There are three political dominating parties in the politics of Mexico:


- PAN: National Action Party (rightists)
MORENA: National Regeneration Movement (leftists)
- PRI: Institutional Revolutionary Party (centrists)


Constitutionally, political parties in Mexico must promote th participation of the people in the democratic life of the country and also contribute in the respresentation of the nation and citizens. All political parties must be registered in the National Electoral Institute and must obtain at least 2% of votes in the federal elections to keep their registry.
Regitered  political parties recieve public funding for their aporation and can also obtain private funding within th limits of  the law. political parties are allowed to form alliances or coalitions to nominate candidates for any particular election. The coalition must present itself with a particular name and logo. Suffrage is universal, free, secret and direct for all Meica citizens of 18 and older.


  • Presidential elections are schduled evety six years excepting the case of absolute absence of the President.
  • Legislative elections are scheduled also every six years in the case of the Senate, and every three years for the Chamber of Deputies.
  • Federal elections are organized and supervised by the Federal Electoral Institute; whereas State and municipal elctions are organized and supervised by electoral institutes.
